Look at number 55.........
Rauschpfeife.......What a funny name for an organ stop. At first sight I thought it was something to do with a smoking pipe, but the truth is more mundane. It is an old German reed instrument. Would have liked to have heard it though. We had wandered into the Kursaal - the concert hall next to the casino in Wiesbaden. They had been showing off the new console for the organ there......all in tasteful red.....
I suppose it's rather like playing a red `cello.....you get used to it. Hmmm. Well, It's not the only example of dubious taste here. Have a look at the bar in the Wiesbaden opera house.......
The beer was all right though. The opera was Verdi's Falstaff. One big rollicking laugh from beginning to end. Once you had found the 1st Circle, that is.......
The curtain call.......videos and photos still banned during the performance thank goodness. Although I have heard that the English National Opera actually encourage it......
There is nothing quite like having a visitor from the other side of the globe to remind you that, yes, Nigel, you actually live in a lovely area of Germany. Even Frankfurt airport has something about it at 6am when you are awaiting the flight from Hanoi.....
A sort of calm efficiency......
Now if you pick up a "Guide to Germany" in Tokyo, it shouts out at you to visit Rüdesheim....
Rüdesheim? Oh no.......it's full of tourists isn't it? Well, actually it isn't. At least not on a weekday in May. And it is, actually, a very nice place. Getting off the train you are right at the river's edge.....
and what a strong powerful river.....the boats going downstream to Cologne have it easy......
Of course the famous have been here before us. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ruminated here.......
....and William Turner no doubt boarded a sailing boat, sketch book in hand.........
Whether the animal park was there in his time is a hotly debated topic for scholars......
...but of the Romanesque church there is no question......
This is western culture par excellence. No Buddhas here....this is Mary and baby Jesus territory......
Now whoever though up the idea of a chairlift to swish you up over the vineyards was a genius......
But of course the idea is that you then land at the monstrous monument at the top. The Niederwalddenkmal. I didn't take a picture of it, well, because it is so gross. But my guest had no qualms....so here it is....
The figure of Germania ( looks a bit like Britannia) raises a triumphant flame to show the French that they have been defeated by the Prussian army. Apparently, when the Kaiser was making his speech at the opening ceremony, all the boats on the river fired off their cannons at the wrong moment, drowning out his words. Must have been a bad internet connection......
about a century and a half later an Engländer poses for a photo......
But there is more fun to come. After a pleasant walk through the woods....passing many a foxglove......
.....and a mollusc having a meal.....yummy!😋
...we reached the chairlift that takes you down to Assmanhausen......it's actually a sort of modified ski lift.......
.......and the views are great.......
Yes, I've been accused of being a hardened cynic by some. Indeed, I was dubious about this place. But it is ideal for a day out from Frankfurt.......
Sometimes the charm is literally at your doorstep. A flock of sheep at Egelsbach......
The lake near Egelsbach airport......
