Quick! Get out of the house before the game ends. Because when it does, the streets of Langen will be filled with the sounds of horns blaring and the shouting of fans.
I escape into the woods, which are only lit by an orange glow on the horizon. 10 pm in July.
Switching off my bicycle lights I cycle quietly along 🚵. A sudden barking makes me stop and freeze. A very strong barking. How could that be a dog? anyway, were are the owners? Do deer bark? Apparently they do.
A while later I heard a crackling in the undergrowth and a dark shape disappearing into the bushes. 🐗.......Wildschwein.

夕方、森の中を自転車で走ります。鹿の鳴き声が聞こえ、野生の豚が見えます。
So now I am back to civilization, at least to the streets of Langen. But it is very quiet. Too quiet. I check the Euro football news. There lies the explanation..........Spain: 2 Germany: 1

Continuing on the theme from last week of "my hiking colleagues have scattered to the four corners of the world....".....we now turn East. But not that far East. As the crow flies, Svitiaz, Ukraine, is nearer Frankfurt that Dunfanaghy in Donegal.
In this charming little rural outpost, only about 30 mins drive to the Belorussian border in one direction, and in the other, Poland, a welcoming garden gate opens for you.......

Sounds like I've been there, doesn't it? Well I'm afraid not. With the air space closed, and long journeys through Poland with possible delays at the border, you would need to be travelling for some other reason than for a holiday.
When is this horrid war going to end?
Despite the invitation (".....We would be very happy to welcome you at our summer house once it is peaceful in Ukraine again....."), I have to do with tempting photos, like these marvellous views of Lake Svitiaz.........

It's never really sunk in. But every time I go to down to the Karlsruhe Musikhochschule, I am only a short drive away from France 🥐. Half an hour in the car, maybe, to the nearest Rhine crossing. And the students in Karlruhe are happy that their €49 Deutschland rail ticket can be used to travel to Paris. So perhaps it was no coincidence that I found myself in an all-French song recital last week. "Lieder von Gabriel Fauré und seinen Schüler:Innen" Oh how awkward is German! "Songs from Gabriel Fauré and his students 🚹: students 🚺.
Venue? The pleasant ambiente of Schloss Gottesau. Gleaming Steinway at the ready.......
ガブリエル・フォーレとその弟子たちの歌。カールスルーエ音楽大学
Gabriel Fauré died in 1924, so this year we are hearing a lot of his music. And as a result, a lot of French poetry as well. I was swept away on a tide of Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier, Paul Verlaine and Claude Mauclair, to name just a few...........
"Mes vers fuiraient, doux et freles, vers votre jardin so beau......." or
"Existence sublime! bercés par notre nid, nous vivons dans l'abime....."
or - "J'ai un couteau dans l'coeur - Une belle, une belle l'a plante -....."
Set to music by the likes of George Enescu, Maurice Ravel, Reynaldo Hahn and Nadia Boulanger...... and of course their teacher - Gabriel Fauré. Delicious.
The programme.......printed on nice creamy paper ....
