North South East West 東西南北 9th January 2022

Updated: Jan 11, 2022

Welcome to the first blog post of January 2022 !

I am writing from the little town of Langen, Hesse, Germany. And more specifically, from The Towers (a name suggested by my friends who pointed out that I do indeed have two towers, albeit small, on my rooftop). The building was completed in 1912 , and here are some proud construction workers (and no doubt the owner) posing for a photo.....

At the time, The Grand Duke of Hesse was in charge of the region, whilst Kaiser Wilhelm II was King of Prussia. George V was on the throne in England, and the year was to be marked forever in the history books with the sinking of the Titanic. At the other side of the world Japan, under Emperor Taisho, was pushing for economic and political concessions with China........

A contemporary photo of Langen seems to suggest a sleepy little town....

Well over 100 years later in 2019 the building had a facelift. That was an uncomfortable summer of hammering, sawing and painting.......

And today it remains today a landmark on the main street of the town....

Looking north, I can see Frankfurt on the skyline ..........well, you can just about see it on this photo.......

....and looking south, I can see Frankenstein Castle in the Odenwald. The little tower below it is the famous Hochzeitsturm on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. But more of that at a later date....

Sunsets provide a great view....

...and a glass of beer in the summer always helps........

...and now and then a wave out of the window....

That's my little introduction. 😊
